Getting started

Steadier is an iOS app that helps adults over 50 build lasting strength and balance through tiny movements woven into daily life. Instead of asking you to carve out dedicated time, Steadier attaches small movements to things you already do - waiting for the kettle, brushing your teeth, standing up from a chair.

The focus is on building functional capability - the kind that means you can get off the floor, climb stairs without holding on, and keep up with the people you love - not on calories, appearance, or athletic performance.

Steadier was built for adults aged 50-70 who don't currently exercise, or who haven't done so in many years. If you've always felt like fitness apps were designed for someone else - someone who already thinks of themselves as a gym person - Steadier was made for you.

It's not designed for people recovering from surgery or managing a serious medical condition, or for people who are already confident exercisers looking for a structured training plan. If you have any health concerns, speak with your GP before starting.

Phase 1 requires no equipment at all - just a chair, a wall, and a bit of floor space. From Phase 2 onwards, a light resistance band is needed for some movements. Resistance bands are inexpensive and widely available. Everything in Steadier is designed to work in an ordinary home.

In Phase 1, each movement takes under 60 seconds - and they happen in moments you already have, like waiting for the kettle to boil. There's nothing to schedule.

In Phase 2, sessions run 5-10 minutes. In Phase 3, 15-20 minutes. These phases are only unlocked when you're genuinely ready for them - so by the time you get there, they feel natural rather than like a big commitment.

Steadier requires iOS 26 or later. It's an iPhone-only app - there's no iPad or Android version, and no web app.

How it works

Habit-stacking is the practice of attaching a new behaviour to an existing one. Instead of asking you to find time for movement, Steadier finds moments you already have and adds something small to them.

For example: the kettle already takes two minutes to boil. Steadier might suggest 10 calf raises while you wait. The calf raises don't require a decision to "go and exercise" - they slot into a gap that was already there. Over time, the movement becomes part of the habit itself.

Onboarding is short and asks very little of you. You'll choose the daily moments that already anchor your routine - waiting for the kettle, brushing your teeth, that sort of thing - and pick the time of day when you feel most like yourself. That's it.

There's no account to create, no email required, and no health history. It closes with a short visualisation - a quiet moment to imagine how you might feel in four months' time.

Steadier moves through four phases:

  • Phase 1 - Habit Sparks (weeks 1-6): Tiny movements attached to daily habits. Two to three per day, each under 60 seconds.
  • Phase 2 - Foundation Moves (weeks 6-16): Dedicated sessions of 5-10 minutes, building functional strength.
  • Phase 3 - Building Confidence (months 4-6+): Longer sessions and increasing self-direction.
  • Steady (graduation): The app steps back. No schedule, no notifications - just the library, available when you want it.

Each phase unlocks based on how many sessions you've completed, not on a clock - so you move at your own pace.

Yes, at any time and without explanation. Steadier Full version shows available alternatives - different movements that build the same capability. If you consistently skip the same movement, Steadier quietly retires it from your rotation without making a fuss about it.

The app tells you. Once you've completed enough sessions in your current phase, you'll see a prompt in the app letting you know the next phase is available. There's no assessment or performance test - it's based purely on consistency.

There's also no pressure to advance. If you're happy where you are, you can stay in your current phase for as long as you like.

Skip it, swap it, or retire it permanently - no explanation needed. Every movement has alternatives that build the same capability, and you can change your set at any time.

If you have a specific health concern - a bad knee, a recent hip replacement, balance issues - it's worth mentioning it to your GP or physiotherapist before you start. They can help you work out what's appropriate. The Programme is designed to flex around you, not the other way around.

Milestones in Steadier mark genuine moments of real-world progress, not arbitrary counts or streaks. Things like:

  • Standing up from a chair without using your arms
  • Balancing on one leg for 10 seconds
  • Climbing stairs without holding the rail
  • Getting up from the floor unaided

Some milestones are visible - you can see you're working towards them. Others appear only when you've earned them, as a genuine surprise. When a milestone fires, it's a calm moment of acknowledgement - no confetti, no "great work" cheerleading.

Missing days and getting back

Nothing. There's no streak counter, no red mark on a calendar, and no "streak broken" message. Missing a day simply means you didn't move that day - and that's fine.

When you open the app again, it's the same as always. No reassessment, no starting over - just today's movements, ready when you are.

Yes. Deleting the app permanently removes all your data - your session history, phase progress, preferences, and everything else. There is no cloud backup, so this cannot be undone.

If you're getting a new iPhone, your progress will transfer automatically as long as you use Apple's standard migration paths: either iPhone-to-iPhone direct transfer (Quick Start) or restoring from an iCloud backup. Both carry the full app data across. If you set up your new phone as a new device without transferring, your Steadier data will not carry over.

Pricing and the free version

Yes. You can try 5 hand-picked movements from Phase 1 for free - no account needed, no payment required. It's a genuine sample of the habit-stacking approach, not a trial that expires.

Steadier will mention the full programme a small number of times, then stop asking. There's no pressure and no interruptions to your sessions.

Steadier Full unlocks the complete programme - the full Phase 1 library of 31 movements, Phase 2 (14 movements), Phase 3 (17 movements), all functional milestones, full progress history, and graduation into Steady mode. 62 movements in total. It's yours for life with a single one-off purchase. No subscription, no auto-renewal, no ongoing charges.

Troubleshooting

Try these steps in order:

  1. Close the app and reopen it. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see open apps, then swipe Steadier upwards to close it. Then tap the Steadier icon to reopen.
  2. Check for an app update. Open the App Store, tap your profile icon in the top right, and scroll down to see if Steadier has an update available.
  3. Check your iOS version. Go to Settings → General → Software Update. Steadier requires iOS 26 or later.
  4. Restart your iPhone. Hold the side button and a volume button until the power slider appears, then slide to turn off. Wait a moment, then turn it back on.
